One of the most frustrating aspects of fixed prosthetics is placing retraction cord. I always found it to be time consuming and also difficult. It always seemed that, like placing a new plastic liner in the kitchen trash can, that just as I was about to get everything the way I wanted, some part would ‘pop’ loose, you had to address it. Of course, about the time you got *that* one taken care of, some other area would do the same thing. It was like a tiny game of Whack-a-Mole around the tooth.

All humor aside though, it’s time consuming, can cause post-op pain, and depending on what your chosen hemostatic agent is, it can be difficult on patients with brittle health issues. That’s why I was so relieved when I learned about gingival troughing with a diode laser. Properly done, the laser practically ‘melts’ the tissue with no bleeding or thermal injury. 

The procedure creates a nice 400 micron groove between the margin and the gingival tissue that allows your digital impression system to clearly see the finish line or to allow impression material to flow past the finish line.

Gingival troughing has no health contraindications and no post-op pain. It is quick, easy, and efficient. It allows the team and I to work efficiently while also providing great clinical outcomes. I would never want to practice without it!
