Why do teeth stain?

Tooth discoloration can be caused by multiple factors; however, the most common cause of tooth stains are caused by particles of food, tobacco, and medications. These particles find their way into the tiny pores within the tooth structure. Consumption of berries, coffee, tea, wine, and soda, are just a few of the most common foods that stain teeth.

What's the difference between Professional and OTC products?

Over-the-counter whitening products are not customized to your needs, and require multiple applications over several days. Professional whitening products are customized by your dentist, to fit your needs and often require only one in-office procedure to transform your smile.

What's the risk?

Clinical studies show that whitening teeth with carbamide or hydrogen peroxide under the supervision of dental professionals is safe for teeth and gums. However, it is not recommended for children under the age of 18 or women who are pregnant or nursing. The only side-effect generally seen is tooth sensitivity for a few days after the procedure. If this occurs, consult your dentist. You may receive a recommendation for a tooth paste for sensitivity, or a professional desensitizer like Sheer DesenZ® desensitizing film. The discomfort is temporary and will disappear quickly.

For many patients, completing a Precise White! treatment once every six to twelve months will have a brilliant smile year round. Depending on your habits, the time between treatments can be longer. Conversely, some patients may need touch ups in-between procedures, in which case, Sheer White! may be dispensed by your dentist.
